Common causes of SHOULDER & Elbow pain

What’s Causing My Shoulder or Elbow Pain?

Shoulder pain can develop from overuse, muscle imbalances, mobility restrictions, or injuries to the muscles, tendons, and structures that support the joint. These issues can affect your ability to lift, reach, throw, sleep comfortably, and stay active.

Tennis Elbow

Also known as lateral epicondylitis, tennis elbow involves irritation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. It commonly causes pain with gripping, lifting, carrying, or repetitive arm movements.

Tennis Elbow

Frozen Shoulder

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder causes progressive stiffness and loss of motion that can make reaching, dressing, and everyday activities increasingly difficult.

Muscle Weakness & Movement Dysfunction

Weakness, mobility limitations, or poor movement patterns can increase stress on the shoulder and elbow, leading to recurring pain and dysfunction.

Labral Irritation

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps stabilize the shoulder joint. Irritation or injury to this structure can cause pain, clicking, catching, or a feeling of instability during movement.

  • From Surgery to Success

“I had seen Patrick Everett on and off through the years for various aches and pains and after a few of his lengthy, dedicated sessions, I was always fine and pain free. It was after I had rotator cuff surgery a year ago that I truly learned how extraordinarily skilled Patirck is and what an amazing human being. I should say first that I was delighted when my surgeon at UCI, when I asked who I should see for PT after my procedure, immediately recommended Patrick at Cuirim, without any prompting from me or any knowledge of our previous acquaintance. After surgery, my arm was wholly immobilized for six weeks and I was not only in tremendous pain, but deeply depressed. I couldn't have worked through it as I did without Patrick and other members of his staff, once I was better, there to guide me. He was throughout caring, sympathetic, and encouraging, and with his profound knowledge and hands-on skills, he helped me recover in what I now know was record time. I will forever be grateful and could not recommend Patrick and Cuirim more highly!”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Shoulder pain can develop without a clear injury due to factors like poor posture, muscle imbalances, limited mobility, or overuse. Over time, these issues can place excess stress on the joint and surrounding tissues, leading to irritation and discomfort.

  • Clicking or popping in the shoulder is often caused by tendons or muscles moving over bony structures, or minor joint instability. If it’s not painful, it’s usually harmless, but if it’s accompanied by pain or weakness, it may indicate an underlying issue.

  • Pain with gripping or lifting is commonly related to tendon irritation, such as tennis elbow. These conditions develop over time when the tendons are repeatedly loaded without enough recovery, leading to sensitivity and decreased strength.

  • It depends on the severity and cause. In many cases, modifying exercises and avoiding painful movements is safe. Pushing through sharp or worsening pain can make the issue worse, so it's best to adjust your routine or get it evaluated if symptoms persist.
